TFT Developments

Mobile & Automotive Applications
Today, we are making displays for mobile applications that run faster, have larger viewing cones, work in a wide range of ambient light, require lower power, are lighter, and are thinner.

Automotive and Industrial Displays
LCDs are being adapted for the special automotive environmental and temperature range specifications required by the automotive industry. Sharp is now making these improvements available for other applications, including Industrial applications that have a need for operation in extended environments. Our modules which have extended temperature ranges, higher shock and vibration ratings, and better brightness and contrast specifications are known as “Strong 2 Displays".

Desktop and Industrial Monitors
Many companies are competing in this area, making it fertile ground for improvements that lead to overall acceptance of LCDs. They continue to surpass them in unit sales; and for the rigors of Industrial usage, our Strong 2 Displays are built to take it.

Viewing Angle Improvement
A significant investment has been made in recent years to overcome the viewing angle limitations for LCDs. Sharp's Advanced Super View Assembly Technology has been a leader in this effort. Competing approaches include PVAMVA, and IPS technologies.

The Future
We will continue to see many new technologies tried and some will undoubtedly succeed, but LCDs are clearly here for a long time to come. As for the future, Active Matrix TFT Investments in LCDs continue at record levels. One of the most exciting areas is in the area of System-on-Panel Technology.

Recent Sharp Active Matrix TFT Developments

Advanced TFT Technology — LCDs deliver excellent viewability under a wide range of ambient light conditions from sunlight to darkened rooms by combining the HR-TFT structure with an integral backlight.

Advanced Super View Assembly Technology — Advanced Super View technology is the foundation for Sharp's next generation of LCD displays. Developed for flat panel TVs, it has improved contrast ratios and response times.

Black TFT Technology — Sharp has developed an original low-reflection coating called "Black TFT" that ensures an optimal contrast ratio even in strong-light conditions.

Super Mobile HR TFT Technology — Sharp's technology for eliminating the requirement for backlights in bright ambient environments.

Ultra Low Power Control (ULC) Minimizes power consumption for mobile applications.

Self-Heating Backlights Extend the operating temperature range for CCFT backlights.

Chip on Glass (COG) Assembly Technology Greatly improves shock and vibration tolerance for ruggedized applications.
